Many people face hair loss for a variety of reasons. As we age, thinning hair is common for both men and women. PRP therapy is an effective treatment that helps many patients regrow thicker hair without surgery.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections stimulate the body’s healing and growth abilities. The treatment involves drawing blood from the patient, which is then run through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, which are the blood cells responsible for clotting and healing, within the plasma. This creates PRP, which is then injected into the treatment area to stimulate the body’s natural self-healing process.
PRP injections can stimulate new hair growth non-surgically. Researchers believe that the treatment works primarily by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles and creating a thicker hair shaft.
The procedure involves injecting the Platelet-Rich Plasma into the scalp where the hair is thinning. The treatment usually requires about three sessions over about a month, followed by maintenance treatments every 4-6 months.
Most people who suffer from hair loss are candidates for PRP therapy. However, this treatment is not suitable for those who take blood thinners or are smokers. Certain chronic diseases, such as metabolic disorders or thyroid disease, among others, may also disqualify you from receiving PRP treatment. Be sure to disclose any of your health concerns with Dr. Sabour during your PRP consultation.

The most important thing to do prior to PRP injection is to come off any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Naprosyn (Aleve) and Diclofenac at least 1 week prior to the procedure as they effect the platelets function. It is advisable not to take them for up to two weeks following the procedure.
