You made the decision to have Botox injections and are eagerly awaiting your first treatment. Here are some tips to help you prepare for a successful appointment.
1. Stop smoking.
Smoking prior to Botox can increase the likelihood of scarring and interfere with healing. Check with your doctor how long before the appointment you should avoid cigarettes.
2. Stop medications and avoid alcohol.
One week before the appointment, you should stop taking ibuprofen, Excedrin, aspirin, and other supplements that can thin the blood. Make sure your doctor is aware of every medication you take so they can recommend when you can resume taking the medications post-treatment. A few days prior to the appointment, you should also avoid alcohol. If pain medication is necessary, Tylenol is the preferred option.
3. Apply Arnica Gel.
Arnica gel is a homeopathic cream that can reduce pain, swelling, and bruises. Patients prone to bruising may be directed to apply it prior to the appointment. Your doctor will also direct you how to apply it post-treatment.
4. Cleanse skin.
Botox should be injected into clean skin. Gently wash your face with a mild cleanser and warm water. Dab it dry with a soft towel.
After Your Botox Injections
After you received the Botox injections, there are a few things you can do to maximize their effectiveness.
1. Keep your head elevated.
Do not lie flat or face down.
2. Exercise the injected area.
Exercise the area by squinting, raising your eyebrows, furrowing the brow, and smiling. Do not massage the area with your fingers for 24 hours after your appointment, because that could cause the Botox to spread to areas where Botox is not wanted or needed.
3. Avoid massages and facials.
For a minimum of 24-48 hours post treatment, avoid massages, facials, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.
4. Do not engage in strenuous activity and use ice as needed.
Activities that raise your blood pressure and heart rate can cause bruises. This includes Yoga and Pilates as well as more traditional cardiovascular exercises like running, hiking, and jumping rope. Stay out of the sun during this time as well. Ice can minimize bruising so use it liberally. Make sure not to apply the ice pack directly onto the skin; use a thin towel or paper towel as a barrier.
5. Do not wear makeup for 24 hours.
Keep the skin free and clear of products including Retin-A and other prescription-strength topical treatments during this time.
