Most people find removing unwanted hair tedious, and processes like waxing or plucking the hair can be painful. Laser hair removal is a versatile and effective treatment that permanently removes hair, saving time from the consistent upkeep of repetitive treatments.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal works by heating the hair follicles enough to sufficiently damage them, ensuring that new hairs can not grow. The laser energy works on the melanin within the hair and vaporizes it. Because there must be some hair present in order for laser hair removal to work, you should not undergo procedures such as waxing which completely remove the hair before your treatment.
The Laser Hair Removal Procedure
Before your laser hair removal treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied to avoid discomfort through the procedure. Protective eyewear will also be worn during the treatment.
Throughout the procedure, a technician will move a handpiece over the treatment area, which delivers the laser energy. Most people experience some minor discomfort during laser hair removal.
In order for the treatment to be effective, hair follicles must be in the anagen (growth) phases of their growth cycle. For this reason, several sessions are necessary in order to remove all of the hair in an area. In most cases, laser hair removal can be completed within five to eight sessions. Session times vary depending on the size of the area being treated.
Who is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Because laser hair removal works by targeting melanin pigments, it is only suitable for some skin tones and hair colors. The best candidates have relatively fair skin and dark hair. If your skin tone is darker, the treatment could potentially damage the surrounding skin.
If you are a candidate, laser hair removal can be used to remove unwanted hair from virtually any area of the body. This includes the:
- Bikini area

Laser hair removal requires no downtime. However, some patients experience mild redness in the treatment area, which dissipates quickly. After receiving laser hair removal, it’s important to minimize sun exposure and apply sunscreen.

SHOULD YOU SHAVE OR WAX BEFORE A LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?
It is not recommended to wax or shave one to two days prior to a laser hair removal treatment. When receiving laser hair removal, the laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle, so you need some of the hair present in order to see the effects. However, you should make sure that the hair is not too long, as it may case the hair to burn and make the procedure uncomfortable.
